Marcel Johansen

Artist Statement: My photos are driven by self discovery, curiosity, spontaneity and uncertainty. Film photography is my medium of choice because all my photos from when I was a child were on film printed in hardcover burgundy albums -- We didn't have a whole lot of money growing up in Ghana but the fact that my mother would choose to spend substantial amounts on storing captures of random moments in my early life drove me to doing the same, but with me this time being the one spending insane amounts of money I do not have to steal these moments from the world in small rectangles. As I move across the world, and from state to state, I encounter starkly contrasting cultures and people to those I grew up around and felt were familiar. I get bored of familiar, crave excitement and have no real grasp on who I am "chameleoning" in my ever-changing environments. My indulgence of art is mostly selfish, as my works currently serve as a photo journal to explore myself through the world around me, redefining who I am and seeing where my artistic inclinations lead me next. Nothing is certain, I have no clear theme, it is all experimental. As the perpetual outsider seeking always to be understood, the only clear message I  deliver is that in our differences, we remain similar.

Bio: Marcel Mawulorm Johansen is a 22 year old embodiment of dynamic energy from Ghana who lost touch with art, and in turn himself as the pressures of life, death, societal conditioning, and responsibilities had overwhelmed his mind and body, having him plop into the grey world of logic and pragmatism. Now, as a compulsively journalling over thinker in a reconstructive, introspective phase of his life, he picks up cameras as he throws himself into precarious situations (not always...there are wholesome moments), in an attempt to rediscover creativity within himself by forcing himself to create an excitement for the world once again. His goals in pursuing art...besides the never ending journey of self-discovery, will not be placed in a box. If he were asked to write another bio, it would be completely different because nothing will ever be enough to explain Marcel. The point, he perseveres, and you perceive his art, the rest evolves as we all do. Ghana to the world, and the world to Ghana.
